The Big Moment
Manu's Bespoke Journey & The 'Beginning of Forever'
Manu proposed to Pip in 2010, creating an unforgettable moment with 400 metres of fairy lights, a group of friends, and some of London’s most iconic landmarks. Their wedding sparked a wave of proposals among their friends, igniting a friendly competition to outdo Manu’s elaborate, bespoke design.
What began as fun and games soon evolved into a brilliant business idea. Manu’s collaborations turned into real engagement rings, meticulously designed using advanced CAD software and expertly handcrafted by traditional jewellers. A few months and several wedding receptions later, Manu and Pip officially launched Hot Pink, their bespoke ring company. Manu even pitched Hot Pink on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den (the UK’s equivalent of Shark Tank).
Although the Dragons didn’t invest, Hot Pink continued to thrive. As the company expanded, Manu and Pip realised they weren't alone in their passion for creating unique, affordable bespoke rings. This realisation led to the birth of Durham Rose, where each love story is crafted with precision and care. By combining cutting-edge technology with the expertise of master jewellery designers, Durham Rose focuses on bringing one-of-a-kind rings to life—one ring at a time.

How the Hunt Started...
Manu in search of 'Perfect Ring' - A bit of a Background
Diamond Knowledge
After tirelessly visiting over twenty jewellers and scouring online sites for weeks, Manu encountered a frustrating reality. Most jewellers relied on rudimentary hand sketches to depict the ring he envisioned, offering vague estimates and lacking precision. Requests for finer details were often dismissed as impossible, and traditional jewellers struggled to refine their sketches accurately. Many demanded upfront payment, leaving Manu to wait weeks without ever seeing the final piece, while giving jewellers considerable leeway in interpreting his design.
Even in London, where a few jewellers used 3D design programmes, their services came at a steep price, and they didn't allow Manu to make his own changes. Any modifications would incur extra charges and were generally discouraged. Feeling deflated but determined, Manu decided to take matters into his own hands. He dedicated over 60 hours to mastering CAD software and designing the perfect ring himself. Yet, despite his efforts, he found only a handful of goldsmiths willing to bring his intricate design to life.
Manu’s journey underscores the challenges faced by those seeking custom jewellery—highlighting a market gap for accessible, precise, and customer-inclusive design services.
Before becoming Durham Rose, we started as Hot Pink. As the company grew, it became clear that the name should better reflect the unique, bespoke services and close relationships built with clients. To capture this connection, Manu and Pip’s middle names were chosen, leading to the rebranding as 'Durham Rose'.
